<p>You don&#8217;t have to be an expert to live a healthy living. The guidelines for living healthy are relatively simple. Where people go wrong is that they fail to stick to them. This should come as no surprise though, especially when you consider all of the unhealthy food choices society has to offer that can derail even the healthiest of lifestyles. </p>
<p>The only way to avoid these temptations is through the use of will-power. You have to be able to tell yourself NO. However, we all have moments of weakness when we want to stray from our healthy lifestyle. But the next time these moments arrive to interrupt your life, remind yourself of the following advantages you have over others because you&#8217;re healthy. </p>
<p>Advantage of Healthy Living #1: Energy</p>
<p>Having more energy is an advantage that often goes overlooked because it&#8217;s just not easily noticeable. If you take a moment to think about it though, you&#8217;ll notice that you actually do have a lot more energy throughout the day. You don&#8217;t find yourself slowing down at work, and you even have plenty of energy left to exercise after getting back home. Having this extra energy has the benefit of keeping you from settling down on the couch for long periods, and instead gets you up and active, and thus, allowing you to burn more calories. </p>

<p>People who live healthy lifestyles have stronger immune systems and a stronger ability to fight off disease. <p>I really need some tips for healthy living. The New Year is in full swing, and like I said earlier this week during my 7 Tips for Healthy Cooking, I feel like crap. Perhaps it&#8217;s not JUST the food I eat. Maybe there are items in my environment that could be affecting my mood, health and wellness.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve got the food and nutrition part covered, being a former Executive Chef at a large hospital, but I wonder what other tips for healthy living I can incorporate into my daily lifestyle. While I may be an expert on cooking, I&#8217;m not an expert on all the other elements that go into a healthy lifestyle.</p>
<p>Luckily, I have a very good friend, Ben Greenfield who IS an expert on these things. Ben is a triathlete, former body builder, and health and nutrition expert. He has taken all the skills he&#8217;s learned over many years from his training routine and brought them into the household.</p>
<p>Ben and Jessa are a great couple, because she has helped further simplify all the things Ben has learned into a comprehensive plan for creating a healthier life, lifestyle, and smarter children. Yes, healthier and smarter children through controlling your environment. I needed to know more.</p>
<p>So, I called Ben and Jessa on Skype recently to ask them for a few of their tips for healthy living that I might incorporate into my life to increase my energy level, brain power, body function, and reduce toxins in my environment.</p>
<p>The healthy lifestyle expert husband and wife team gave me some great suggestions during this video phone call, and even offered an opportunity to join the Ben Greenfield Fitness Inner Circle to get even more information and support.</p>
<p>Since I&#8217;ve been feeling a bit sluggish and irritable lately, Ben&#8217;s first suggestion was to examine HOW my body is using the food that I&#8217;m supplying to it. He says I might be eating healthy foods, but not enough variety of food to supply essential vitamins that my body needs. A lack of the proper fuel can mean that my &#8220;engine&#8221; isn&#8217;t running smoothly.</p>
<p>Ben says that Vitamin B is essential to the way the human body metabolizes fat. It&#8217;s a cheap and simple way to boost your body&#8217;s function, as Vitamin B should cost less than  a month. Ben spoke about omega-3 and omega-6 elements in food and cooking oils like he was reciting his ABC&#8217;s. He really knew what he was talking about, but I had no idea what he was saying. Greater research is needed on my part. </p>
<p>Jessa advised that I use coconut oil in my cooking, as this has the right type of Omega&#8217;s my body may need. Coconut oil is better metabolized by the body, and has a higher smoke-point, making it harder to burn things during sauté. That&#8217;s a great suggestion I can immediately implement.</p>
<p>When I told Jessa that I have air fresheners in my home, the kind that plug into the wall, she said &#8220;get rid of them!&#8221; It never dawned on me that my household environment could be contributing to my general health and energy level. &#8220;Air fresheners and scented candles can coat the nasal passages, and cause allergic reactions,&#8221; she warned.</p>
<p>&#8220;Clean with white vinegar instead of bleach&#8221; was another easily accomplished tip for healthy living from Jessa. White vinegar absorbs odors, is non-toxic, and has a better &#8220;clean&#8221; smell than the hospital scent of bleach. Jessa also has great recipes for home made cleaning products and disinfectants that will save your household budget and reduce toxicity levels in your home.</p>
<p>&#8220;The trick is making changes that are cheap, do-able, practical, and appropriate for your lifestyle&#8221;, says Ben. &#8220;You don&#8217;t need to buy expensive supplements or turn your home into an expensive iPod health-information device.&#8221; </p>
<p>&#8220;You can take charge and make your body and your home a healthier place to be, you just have to know where to start,&#8221; was the final and perhaps best advice Ben Greenfield gave me during the call. He made me feel better by knowing I have the power to change these things and help myself to feel better. </p>
<p>As our time came to an end, I felt guilty because I &#8220;stole&#8221; so many great tips for healthy living from Ben and Jessa. This is what they do for a living. They help thousands of people all over the world to be healthier, more vibrant, get sick less, and improve the lives of their children as well. They are not &#8220;hippies&#8221;, they&#8217;re just like you and me. However, they&#8217;ve been living a healthy lifestyle for many years and will share their approach with you.</p>

<p>1) Choose weight training exercises which move your body through space. This means choose exercises where your torso moves, unlike exercises where your torso remains in a fixed position. Assuming you have no injuries or other physiological concerns, choose exercises like squats, deadlights, dips (using additional weight if you can maintain safe exercise form), chin-ups (again with added weight), and other exercises like these. Exercises which move your torso require multiple muscle groups and, therefore, have the best chances of inducing muscle growth. </p>
<p>2) Eat more, but make it healthy food. If you have approval to gain weight you should first have a specific amount you want to gain, such as ten pounds. Once you reach that goal you will switch to a different eating style. One way to make the transition easier while still gaining weight is to eat healthy food while increasing your weight. <p>In order to calculate calories to maintain weight effectively, start by placing yourself on a bathroom scale, or have your weight taken at your doctor&#8217;s office to get the exact number of your body weight.</p>
<p>Next, get a proper measurement of your height. In order to calculate calories to maintain weight, you will need to put these numbers into inches and not feet.</p>
<p>Thirdly, you will need to determine your activity level by using the Harris Benedict Equation. With each activity level there is a numeric value that is taken out of five different categories, and these are: sedentary, mildly active, very active and vigorously active.</p>
<p>The numeric values for these activity levels are:</p>
<p>Sedentary &#8211; 1.2Mild &#8211; 1.375Moderate &#8211; 1.55Very &#8211; 1.725Extremely &#8211; 1.9</p>

<p>After you have calculated your calories that are needed for you to maintain weight, keep this number for your daily intake journal. If you are looking to lose weight, cut the calories back as much as you need in order to achieve your target weight. </p>
<p>Using this formula will help you to keep track of the calories to maintain weight without having to do guess work when you are creating your diet plan. This is not an equation that needs to be exact on a daily basis, but it is a good map to follow while you are meal planning.</p>
<p>Another method to use on top of using this equation for the calories to maintain weight is to implement an exercise routine that is followed at least three times a week for thirty minutes a day.</p>
<p>You can chose to do a low intensity cardio program that will take about forty minutes a day but will take longer to get results as far as fat burning is concerned. </p>
<p>Or, you can choose a more vigorous work out routine to burn the calories to maintain weight, but you will have to use high intensity reps for twenty minutes a day followed by a five minute cool down.</p>

After that time period, the individual may then advance to the second phase, which is the weight loss maintenance phase. It is important to understand that exercise is an important component in both phases of the diet plan in order for it to work effectively. The amazing thing is, when you do start to lose the weight, you can SEE the weight loss &#8211; your ankles may get slimmer, or the bracelet that you fell in love with but was always so tight on your wrist, now moves about beautifully on your new slim frame.You must be dedicated to participating in an active and healthy lifestyle. For example, you can have some carbs on this diet as long as they are good carbs and they rank low on the glycemic index. In addition, it is perfectly okay for you to eat out. Vegetarians frequently find that many low carb diets do not work well for them because they place a strong emphasis on meat. With time and dedication the Low Glycemic Index Diet plan has proven to be quite effective at managing diabetes, promoting weight loss and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
